2024 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Engine Differences
Gas or diesel? This is the decision you’ll need to make as you choose which 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD engine is right for you. The turbo diesel engine makes higher horsepower and torque numbers, and can help you achieve higher conventional and fifth-wheel towing numbers. Top payload specs between the two are similar, but a slight advantage goes to the gas engine.
Maximum torque output for the gas engine peaks at 4,000 revolutions per minute (RPM), while the max output of 975 pound-feet of torque with the Duramax engine is available at just 1,600 RPM. The 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque for the Duramax engine are increased in the 2024 model year, compared with the 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque in the outgoing 2023 model.
Both engines are paired with an Allison® ten-speed automatic transmission — a new upgrade for the gas engine in the 2024 model year — and can be equipped with either a four-wheel drive (4WD) or rear-wheel drive (RWD) drivetrain.

One of the beauties of the 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD is that no matter which engine you prefer, your favorite trim option offers it. Every Silverado 2500 HD includes the 6.6L gas V8 engine as the standard power plant, with the option to upgrade to the Duramax. However, if you’re interested in the power take-off (PTO) option with the Duramax, only the WT, Custom, and LT trims offer it.
